FUNDAMENTAL OF PASTORAL MINISTRY THE MINISTRY The ministry is the channel through which the message and the ministry is conveyed or transmitted to the people. The minister is an instrument through which the ministry and the message is being conveyed. The quality of the minister determines the quality of the ministry. The ministry is a reflection of the minister. A careless carefree minister will raise a careless carefree ministry. If a minister is dull, he will have a dull ministry. If a minister has a poor mentality, he will attract poor people. The size of the ministry reflects the size of the minister. Expand your mentality, dare to start big things. Small mentality, small ministry, poor mentality, poor ministry. To set your mentality right, there must be a period of preparation. Prepare towards where you are going and not what you have physically. You can’t calculate base on what you have but your availability. God’s vision must always be bigger than you, therefore, there must be. TIME FOR SPIRITUAL PREPARATION Until your spirit is enlarged, nothing can be achieved on the outside. Leave this class with a big mentality. STEPS TO SPIRITUAL PREPARATION 1.WORD PREPARATION: The word is basic for every ministry. Any ministry that will reach the ends of the earth must be born out of the word of God. God will show you what you are looking for in the word. THINGS THAT ENHANCES WORD PREPARATION A.READING - ISA. 34:16: The manifestation of what you are reading will show. Reading is the gathering of information in the word of God. What you’ve gathered determines what you will scatter. B.STUDYING - 2TIM. 2:14-15: When a man gives himself to studying, the word will approve of you. Studying is the dissection of information, gathered in reading and applying it in your life. C.MEDITATION - JOSH. 1:8: This is the assimilation of the word into your system. This means retaining the revelation you have got and staying with it. 2.MATERIAL PREPARATION: There is a direct impartation of the spirit of the speaker/writer. Materials gives you direction on what to do. It enhances your ministration. A material includes tapes, VCD, books etc. To invest in materials is to invest in ministry. 3.PRAYER PREPARATION: Prayer is depending on God and God depending on you. If prayer must be effective, it must be two sided. Whatever God will ever do in your ministry comes by your instruction. CONDITIONS THAT MAKES COMMUNICATION EFFECTIVE 1.Praying in Faith - Josh. 1:6-8: i.e believing that what you’ve asked will be answered. Everything needs to be subjected to prayers 2.Fasting: If you want to see supernatural manifestation fast, it is fasting that releases the frequency - Isa. 5:16. Fasting is in realms. Fasting will give you fire power to your ministry. If you fast, you must pray. Fasting without prayer is hunger strike. 3.Association - Prov. 27:17: Your association determines your manifestation. Who you are spending your time with determines how far you can go in life. When you are supposed to be a child of destiny, not everybody is permitted to be your friend; manage friendship. SOME LEVELS OF ASSOCIATION 1.HIGH LEVEL OF ASSOCIATION: This speaks of association of people who are above you in ministry. You must realize that every minister have their own peculiarity, what you are looking for determines who you associate with. You must be able to define what you are looking for and the people must have seen the proof of what you are looking for. Proofs are confirmations of God approval. Don’t associate with anybody without proof Note: Your destiny is more important than your assignment. If you don’t keep inspiring people, you will soon expire; people won’t get tired of you if you keep inspiring them. 2.THE SAME LEVEL ASSOCIATION: The aim is for reasons of interactions. The people of the same level with you are people that can easily influence your ministry. Don’t be proud, humble yourself and learn from them. 3.LOWER LEVEL ASSOCIATION: The aim of this is for people to be able to learn from you. The reason you will succeed is to see other people succeed. What will guarantee your longevity in life and ministry is the raising of other people. It is important to raise a minister than to raise a congregation. God gives the vision to one man but you need men to find the vision (Hab. 2:2-4). Don’t be intimidated by anyone, you don’t fall into that trap, because those you employ will leave you later, but those who raise will stay with you. RISE MEN! THE REASONS FOR SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT OF A MINISTER 1.DIRECTION: Direction knows what to do, how to do it, and where to do it (Prov. 20:27) if you give yourself into spiritual development, you will always know what to do. The spirit that is developed is the spirit that have access to God. If you want your spirit to be God’s vessel, you must develop your spirit. 2.FREQUENCY IN SPIRIT (PS. 104:4): The spirit should be fervent, your spirit must be developed. Fire that is not handled in the spirit cannot manifest in the physical (Rom. 12:11). This gospel cannot be preached without fire. Developed spirit equals fire led spirit. 3.COURAGE (PROV. 18:14): In the course of the ministry, there may arise storms, oppositions etc. Courage means moving in the face of storm. The spirit of a man is the centre of courage. Anyone that is calm in the face of storms is developed in the spirit. 4.SPIRITUAL IMPARTATION: As a minister, you are called to develop other ministers. You can’t impart anybody if your spirit is not developed. If you fail to develop yourself, it will show in the caliber of congregation you will have. 5.IT ENHANCES YOUR SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY: Success in ministry is level of spiritual development you’re attained. This is a point where your voice is known in heaven, on earth and in hell. To raise the most populated church in any town, make sure that your spiritual temperature is higher than the spiritual temperature of the most populated one. 6.FOR THE CREATIVE FORCE OF GOD TO BE REVEALED: What makes a man look like God in his spirit? A developed spirit gives rise to the creative power of God – Gen. 1:1-3. When your spirit is not developed, the creative force will be absent. The developed spirit will always give rise to the creative power. MENTAL DEVELOPMENT OF A MINISTER Mental development is the upgrading of the mental capacity of a minister. If a minister developed spiritually without mentality, there will be problems. There must be a balance for both responsibility to upgrade my mentality. TOOLS FOR MENTAL DEVELOPMENT 1.INFORMATION CONSUMPTION: The food of the spirit is revelation, the food of the mind is information while the food of the body nutrition. It takes massive information consumption to be mentally developed (Dan. 9:2). To the extent to which you have information makes you an authority in that area understand by books. Read different books. There is no end to learning; if you want to be an authority in any area, get information in that area. Solution springs up as a result of massive information consumption. 2.OBSERVATION: It is easy to reproduce what you have seen (Lam. 3:51): What you see enter or affect your heart. Eyes that look are different from eyes that they see. Watch out for things. 3.WRITING ANYTIME: You write down a thought of your mind and put down another. Writing down things puts your mind under pressure to release another one. Think with a focus/subject, ideas flows when you think. FUNCTION OF THE MIND When God speaks, he speaks to your spirit then your spirit communicates to your mind. The spirit of God speaks to the spirit of a man while the spirit of man speaks to his mind. 1.The mind of man gives spiritual direction A it's 10 Vs 19. When your mind is developed you can hear from the spirit. 2.To generate solutions. The mind is for reasoning in order to produce a solution put the mind to work. 3.It is the centre of intelligence: Intelligence is a function of mind development. Read books to enlarge the capacity of your mind and put pressure on it to remember. 4.It is the gate of the spirit all experienced and processed by your mind. Don't allow what you think is negative to become one with your spirit. Be careful what enters your mind because it is a matter of time before it mislead. 5.It is the centre for emotion: Under developed mind gives rise to underdeveloped emotions. To pastor quality people you have to develop your mind. As a pastor they must talk about you, how you handle it is a matter of development of the mind. 6.The mind is the centre of your will: If you don't have will of your own you cannot do ministry. There are different spirits that will creep into the church Viz Absalom, Jezebel, Peter, Spirit etc. God does not speak to people, the atmosphere you are is determine the source of message. The real assignment of the man of God is prayer and the word of God Act 6 Vs 4, 1 Sam 12 Vs 22. THE MESSAGE The aim of ministry is to impact generation and that impact is the message. Every messenger must have a message. A messenger, without a message will mess up. Any ministry that will endure must be built on message and not of gifts. Two things that message produce in the ministry Biz (a) Longevity (b) Productivity i.e. result where you have not been commissioned with a message. You can connect yourself with a commission that has a message, the message that has been burning in your mind. Messaging is heavenly product marketing. When we preach are speaking or advertising what heaven has to offer. The danger of preaching another person's message is that people who you are SENT to will still lack the message you message would have met. MESSAGE PREPARATION As a minister always endeavour to preach a message than to give a sermon. A message is sent to a generation congregation. While delivering your message be generational minded. Generational mentality gives between to generational affordability/affection. The message must be heated and passionate under pressure and relevant to the situation of the people. It must be practical, life applicable and it must answer questions. As you are preaching and seeing faces, the things you are saying must answered their question. Be under pressure before you climb the altar that something must happen, situation must change. Etc. Before you climb the altar make sure you are loaded. You must be loaded before you can be needed. All your declaration on the altar must come with conviction. You are not speaking as if you are giving suggestion or opinion or advice but a command. Don't preach a message as if you don't achieve what you're saying. Your word must come with authority. Think about the issue you are about to preach. Make it a responsibility that the best must come anytime you are preaching. THE CONTENT OF THE MESSAGE 1.INTRODUCTION: You must give a foundation for your delivery. They need to know where you are coming from. You need to put a solid foundation on ground. 2.REVELATION: Under the revelation you direct the text releasing, the spirit behind that word from the letter of the word. You release the creative ability in the world and make the issue clear. 3.INFORMATION: Every message must be loaded with information. Another word for information is extra scriptural facts that back up what you are saying. They also make the point clearer to the hearer. Adding information makes your message heavy. For that to happen every minister must be reader. 4.TESTIMONIES: In the course of your delivery refer to real life stories that verifies the reality of God's word. Testimonies are spiritual error - heads towards the blasting away of doubts and unbelief. 5.APPLICATION / DIRECTION: Never preach a message that never gives the people a responsibility that must be you being an irresponsible preacher. Every word you proclaim must be back up with responsibility. The question in every listener is "What shall I do.” Answer that question, proclamation without application is confusion. You never leave the people in doubt of what to do. Tell them their responsibilities, tell them the truth. Preaching is not entertainment, performance or a showmanship, it is a serious business. Be destined minded.
